Beach Baby

Still back tracking to share things we did in May. We spent 3 days camping on Tybee Island which is just outside Savannah at the end of May. We spent just about everyday on the beach and one day in Savannah.
Shelby Girl just loves the beach! I joke with Don all of the time about Shelby being so much like him that I wondered if I actually contributed any genetic material at all. BUT, her love of the beach and the ocean she definitely gets from her Mama!
When the tide went out that morning, a small pool of water was trapped on the beach creating a litle tide pool for the children to play in. It was great!
She made it to about 1pm that day and was soon down for the count. She slept for 3 hours that afternoon. Once she woke up, she asked to go back to the beach.Having fun with Dad. Her favorite kind of ride.
We took a break from the beach on our last day and went into Savannah for the day. It was hot and at lunch time we were looking for a cool spot for lunch. We found it! This was such a surprise. Vic's on the River is down on the riverfront and is close to the middle trolley stop. You walk into the ground floor and take the elevator to the 4th floor to be seated in the restaurant. The view was fantastic. When you land on the fourth floor, the elevator opens to a beautiful piano bar and beyond that was this long simply stated and decorate room. They were totally kid friendly and Shelby had a meal for only $5.00.
We got a table right at the window. I thought it was a bit quiet for lunch time, but it filled up rather quickly. We enjoyed hot biscuits with fresh marmalade and honey butter. Shelby was all about those! We enjoyed this lovely white wine with lunch. I had the waitress write it down so I could look for it back home. I am still searching for the piece of paper. When I find it, I will share the wine with you. It was outstanding! REVISED: The wine is Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand-2008, and it is only $10.00 a bottle. I chose the Shrimp and Cheese Grits. It had smoky bacon and this yummy brown sauce. It was filled with parmesan cheese. I have been wanting to try this dish since I moved to Georgia and I was not disappointed. We will definitely be going back.
Lee, this last picture is for you. I took this picture of these Golden Girls as they were walking down the beach. It struck me how sweet they were. Some old friends talking and walking together. This will be us in a few years from now. Just a couple of old gals, talking about our children and probably our art, as usual. We'll be in better shape, though!

I finally made it to the Plum Tree!

Since I first started following Dawn's blog, I have always wanted to go to the Plum Tree Antiques. It is about an hour ride from me, but I never made time to go or to stop during a trip to Atlanta. So, when Lee flew in the Thursday before the Farm Chicks Show, me, Judy and Lee met Dawn at the Plum Tree. It was just wonderful and so worth the trip. It was also a great opportunity to see our buddy Dawn again! The Plum Tree is a quaint, little old house just off the town square in McDonough. Cindy is the owner, operator and she does an outstanding job at displaying all of the vintage goodness and makes some wonderful vignettes.I bought that little wooden shoe you see in this picture. It has a slide out little compartment at the top. This jewelry display is so cute and the burlap is a great contrast to the sparkly baubles.
Judy spotted this bird cage for me and I just gasped. I love the idea for the studio to hold lots of cards. Maybe next visit. I was saving my money for Farm Chicks.
Cindy has created a place that you just want to hang around and linger in. We kept going back into the various rooms to make sure we saw everything. This is no junk shop! Don't get me wrong. I like those, too, but this is a beautiful place to shop and a feast for the eyes.
This window is very clever. It is made to look like a porch awning.
Down in the bottom left corner of this photo is that tiny scale. We loved the glass dome sitting on the top with the tiny treasures inside. It makes a great display!
Mom, I thought of you when I saw this. What a cute way to display your crochet threads under this hurricane globe.
Here is Dawn and Lee talking shop as we say. You know what happens when you get crafters and bloggers together. The ideas start flying!
We enjoyed our walk around inside, each bought a few goodies and then we went outside to check out some of the garden art and displays.
This whole place is just a fun time and full of decorating ideas. The prices were terrific! Check out the Plum Tree blog. Cindy is having some fun contests this summer and chances to win prizes. When Shelby goes back to school this August, I will be grabbing Judy up, calling Dawn and making another run to McDonough.
Dawn, thanks for meeting up with us that afternoon. It was great to see you again! Dawn made each of us these sweet lavendar sachets with these wonderful floral images on them. They smell so wonderful. Thanks, dear friend! See you soon.

C.L.O.G. Supper Club 2009 Kick Off

The Cool Ladies of Gray (C.L.O.G.)started their very own supper club this past Saturday night. Our Girls Night Group which has been meeting for a year, decided with the leadership of Stephanie to get a supper club going this summer. We each take turns hosting a dinner at our homes and decide on the menu. The host selects the recipes, hands them out to each of the women and they are responsible to make the one item assigned to them and bring it to the supper. It gives us a wonderful opportunity to try new recipes, add a bunch to our own collection and taste them, of course among great friends. We included our husbands, decided kids were off limits and set the dates!

Since Stephanie has been a part of a supper club in her last neighborhood and suggested ours, she hosted first. The menu consisted of the following:

Avocado Relish with Mozzarella Quesadillas

Sweet Vidalia Onion Tart

Rum Swizzles (these can totally wreck you!)

Low Country Boil

Marinated Tomatoes

Key Lime Meringue Tarts
Strawberry-Blueberry Compote in Red Wine Syrup over ice-cream.

Here are some pics of the C.L.O.G.S and their dates:
Stephanie and Tom
Marla and Paul
Trina and Hal
Oops! That's not Annette and Stan. It is Annette and Marla. I missed getting a pic of Stan and Annette this go round. I will catch them together next supper!
Me and Don

The food was fantastic and the recipe that I was given to make was the Key Lime Meringue Tarts. I will share the recipe with you all at the end of the post!
Yummy appetizers! Trina rocked this recipe out!! She made the avocado relish and mozzerella quesadillas. The avocados were like eating butter and the basil sauce with all of it made it super fresh.Sweet Vidalia Onion Tart. The main event! The low country boil. It turned out really good. Stephanie's recipe had a real Louisianna flare to it. A bit different from the recipe's I have been exposed to while living in the South. It used Zatarain's creole crab boil which gave it a bit of a kick.
Here is some of the gang waiting for desert! Here are the Key Lime Tarts. It was a great recipe and were easy to make. They also make a great presentation. They are however, very rich and very sweet, but very yummy!!!

We also finished up dinner with the Berry Compote in Red Wine Syrup which was excellent. I will be trying all of the recipes again myself. I also brought a hostess gift. I made Stephanie a decorated match stick box with some votive candles in a matching gift bag. I hope she liked it. I forgot to take picture, of course.

We had a wonderful time and our Hub's all seemed to get along great! We are looking forward to our next dinner at Trina and Hal's. Stay tuned for more great summer fun and great recipes.

Here is the Key Lime Meringue Tart recipe for you to try:8 egg yolks

2 cups sweetened condensed milk

Lime zest from 1 lime

3/4 cup sugar

8 tart shells (Available in frozen food section)

4 egg whites

1/4 cup lime juice

Combine the egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk and lime peel in a bowl and whisk together until well mixed. Whisk in the lime juice gradually. Ladle into the tart shells, filling 3/4 full. Bake at 400 dgrees for 15-20 minutes our until filleing is set. Cool on wire rack.

Beat the egg whites with 1 tablespoon of sugar in a mixing bowl until soft peaks form. Add remainig sugar very gradually, beating constantly until stiff peaks form and all of the sugar is incorporated. Bake at 400 degrees just until goldne brown. Cool completely at room temperature, then place into the refridgerator until ready to serve.

Note: I used x-tra large eggs so I ended up getting 12 tarts out of this batch instead of 8.
